Rice Krispies Cereal Flavors

Rice Krispies have been a staple at breakfast time for nearly 100 years, with the original crisped rice cereal first being launched by the Kellogg company in the UK in 1928.

There’s something about the gentle flavor and marketing that made it a hit and have kept it going ever since, with the cereal reportedly making $136.7 million in 2018. Chances are if you’ve ever eaten cereal in your life, you’ve tried Rice Krispies.

The simplicity of this Rice Krispies makes it a perfect medium to explore other exciting flavors, as well as altogether different snacks like Rice Krispies Treats, which are nearly as ubiquitous as the cereal itself. Kellogg’s has even introduced a Rice Krispies Treats cereal to keep the fans satisfied.

Today we’re going to look at how healthy Kellogg’s Rice Krispies and some of their offshoots are.

Rice Krispies

If you want simplicity in a breakfast cereal, there are few competitors to rival Rice Krispies. Just take a look at the ingredients below, it’s not every day you get a cereal with this flavor made with only 4 ingredients. On top of that, you can buy Rice Krispies in almost every country and store imaginable.

The simple formula for puffed rice was perfected in 1928, and while it may have undergone a few changes over the years, the basic formula is still the same. If you want them gooey add a little extra milk, if you like the crunch then add less. Either way, there’s something about that classic ‘Snap! Crackle! And Pop!’ that will get you salivating.

And if you’re feeling creative, you can make a batch of homemade rice crispy treats. This straightforward recipe shows that the subtle nature of this cereal makes them the perfect medium for other flavors, in this case sticky, treacly marshmallows.

Is it healthy?

It’s hard to answer this question as Krispies aren’t technically unhealthy as they are so low in lots of macros. However, this does mean that they won’t provide a substantial amount of energy at the start of your day.

The great thing about this cereal is it uses no artificial colors or flavors. The shortlist of ingredients shows there are no undesirable chemicals and that what you’re getting is a simple cereal with no added frills.

Only 2.4g of a 30g serving is sugars, however, it is made up of 26g of carbohydrates. This combined with a minimal 0.9g of fiber means the energy in Rice Krispies cereal is not going to tide you over comfortably until lunch.

For this reason, it’s best to have Rice Krispies alongside one or two other elements to make your breakfast more nutritionally diverse and filling.

Is it gluten-free?

While rice is a gluten-free grain, the Kellogg company adds a dash of flavor to this cereal with barley malt extract. Like rye and wheat, barley is a gluten-containing grain, so while this uses only a dash of barley, it is best avoided by celiacs or people following a restricted diet.

Is it vegan?

Rice Crispies contain two gray-area ingredients that may be problematic for vegans. Firstly, the sugar in this cereal may have been whitened with bone char, a common part of the cereal production process. Some vegans don’t mind this but some stricter followers of the diet may want to steer clear.

Secondly, vitamin D3 in this cereal is derived from lanolin, also known as sheep’s wool. This is present only in trace amounts, so again it’s up to the discretion of the individual vegan.

Is it keto?

Cereals are generally a no-go for keto diets. They are naturally very low in fat, as grains are not a fatty food source, and are also very high in carbohydrates. A single 30g serving of this cereal contains 26g of carbohydrates, which would stop your body from being able to reach a ketosis state.

Protein and fiber content

Rice is naturally low in protein and fiber, so Rice Krispies are not a good source of either, with only 2.1g and 0.9g respectively.

Cocoa Krispies

Cocoa Krispies are a straightforward chocolatey twist on the original formula, available both as a cereal or as Rice Krispie Treat bars. Think Cocoa Pops and you’re on the right track. All the Snap! Crackle! And Pop! of the original with a bowl of chocolate flavor milk to enjoy when you’re finished.

They’re also perfect for spicing up your homemade Rice Krispie treats. This chocolatey spin-off can be used for all sorts of combinations, like butterscotch chocolate peanut butter.

Is it healthy?

Not especially, but they’re also not as unhealthy as other sweet cereals. They have a relatively low list of ingredients however they do contain artificial colors, though this will only be in low amounts.

They are a poor source of energy, offering only 160 calories in a 42g serving, with 37g coming from carbohydrates, 13g of which is sugar. These are best enjoyed alongside other foods at breakfast as they won’t keep you going until lunch.

That being said, if you just want a snack or to make some Rice Krispies treats then there are much worse things you could be eating.

Is it gluten-free?

Unfortunately, despite using gluten-free rice as the main ingredient, the barley malt extract contains gluten, making this unsuitable for celiacs or people following a gluten-free diet.

Is it keto?

Cereals as a rule of thumb are very high in carbohydrates and very low in fat, making them entirely unsuited to keto. If you want to try the keto diet you are better off avoiding cereals altogether as they will prevent your body from reaching ketosis.

Protein and fiber content

Low on both macros here with only 3g and <1g of each macro respectively.

Final Thoughts

We’ve only had time to touch on a couple of classic Krispies flavors today. They’re also available in Frosted and in Cinnamon Sugar varieties.

Pebbles Cereal Flavors

First introduced in 1971 as a Flintstones tie-in Pebbles cereal has appeared in several flavors, remaining a hit at breakfast time with kids and those with a good sense of nostalgia to this day.

Pebbles are a crispy rice cereal resembling little rocks in a rainbow of colors when in classic Fruity Pebbles flavor.

Since the original Fruity Pebbles, Cocoa Pebbles have also become a permanent fixture from Post Consumer Brands. Both Cocoa and Fruity Pebbles come in permanent marshmallow Pebbles varieties for those who need their marshmallows at breakfast time.

As well as fruity and cocoa flavors, this sweetened rice cereal has been available in a huge list of temporary flavors, such as Cinnamon Pebbles, Candy Corn Pebbles, and Ice Cream Pebbles to name just a few.

The range of Pebbles products also covers snacks and treats to enjoy throughout the day.

Today we’re going to have a look at some of the flavors of Pebbles cereals and what sort of nutrition they offer.

Fruity Pebbles Cereal

The original formula, Fruity Pebbles are similar to Froot Loops with a big dose of artificial flavoring creating that classic flavor that you can only really get from fruit-flavored cereal.

Marshmallow Fruity Pebbles are a twist on the classic formula which capitalize on the cereal/marshmallow combo so beloved in Lucky Charms.

Various other temporary flavors of Fruity Pebbles cereal have been available throughout the years, such as Bamm Bamm Berry Pebbles, Winter Fruity Pebbles, Summer Berry Pebbles, and Fruity Pebbles Extreme, which boasted brighter colors and stronger flavors. Magic Fruity Pebbles were another temporary release that turned the milk purple.

As an hommage to Wilma Flintstone and her family, they even released Dino Pebbles.

No, it doesn’t take a detective to figure out that Fruity Pebbles are not a healthy cereal. One look at the bright coloring and we can tell this is not a cereal that’s made using natural products.

Fruity Pebbles contains a series of artificial colors and preservatives to maintain its fruit flavor, though it has also been fortified with a host of important minerals and vitamins. While this is a bonus, there are much better cereals or natural ways to acquire these vitamins, here they’re added simply to counterweight Fruity Pebbles otherwise empty macronutrients.

The 160 calories in a 36g serving come primarily from simple carbohydrates and sugar, with 34.4g and 13.8g of each respectively, making them the primary source of energy in Fruity Pebbles. The minimal fiber count, 0.3g, provides no slow-release energy of these sugars, meaning you will feel no fullness after a bowl of Fruity Pebbles.

Fruity Pebbles are best off eaten alongside other more sustaining foods at breakfast to ensure you feel fuller on your way to lunchtime.

Is it gluten free?

Yes, Fruit Pebbles crisp rice cereal bits are suitable for a gluten-free diet.

Is it vegan?

Yes, there are no animal products in Fruity Pebbles so they are suitable, though there is one caveat.

Sugar when used in cereals is often whitened using bone char derived from animal bones, though this substance won’t be in the final cereal, its use in the process means some discretion is advised if you’re following a cruelty-free diet.

Is it keto?

No, Fruity Pebbles is very high in carbohydrates, 13g higher than the maximum daily amount allowed to let your body enter a ketosis state. It’s also very low in fat, which is crucial to the body’s production of ketones.

Protein and Fiber Content

Fruity Pebbles is low in many important macronutrients, especially fiber, of which it only has 0.3g. Fruity Pebbles is also very low in protein, containing only 1.8g. Heavily processed cereals are often low in important macros which get lost during the production process.

Cocoa Pebbles

Fruity Pebble’s sister cereal Cocoa Pebbles has been on shelves for 40 years, only a little less than Fruity Pebbles. The more subtle chocolate flavor and brown color are more pleasing to some consumers who find the brightness of the fruity original offputting. Plus you get to enjoy a bowl of chocolate milk afterward!

Is it gluten free?

Yes, the crisp rice cereal bits in Cocoa Pebbles use no gluten-containing grains so are suitable for a restricted diet. Unfortunately, Cocoa Marshmallow Pebbles are not suitable for celiacs or gluten-free diets.

Is it vegan?

The Cocoa Pebbles formula contains no explicit animal products, although as above discretion is advised about sugar being whitened with bone char.

Is it keto?

No, this cereal is made using rice, which is a high source of carbohydrates and therefore unsuited to a keto diet, which requires a carbohydrate intake to be reduced to as close to zero as possible.

Increased fat intake is also necessary so the body can produce ketones while in a ketosis state, and with only 1.2g of fat, Cocoa Pebbles are not a sufficient energy source.

Protein and Fiber Content

Pretty poor representation of both macros here, with only 1.4g of protein in a serving and only 0.5g of fiber.

Final Thoughts

Over the years Pebbles cereal has released numerous variations on its original flavors, either for short or long-term releases. With puffed rice being so easy to flavor or add to, they’re a great medium for exploring different flavor combinations.

Stone Age Caramel Apple, Dino S’Mores Pebbles, Cupcake Pebbles, and birthday cake flavored pebbles are just a few of the crazy flavors Post have implemented over the years to keep their fans hooked.

While these temporary flavors come and go, Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Pebbles will always be a popular choice at breakfast, and while they’re not the healthiest option, as long as you’re eating them as part of a balanced breakfast you could be doing much worse.

  • Total Carbohydrate – 29 g

  • Total Sugars – 5 g
  • Protein – 7 g

Is it healthy?

Kellogg’s Special K Original could be considered healthy for a number of reasons. First of all, it does not contain many sugars, which is great because it leaves room for you to add your own sweetness to your breakfast cereal in your own way, whether it be your favorite yogurt or a dash of your favorite ice-cold milk.

In addition, the total calories are low, and the fat content is also particularly low in number, making the breakfast cereal a healthy choice for the morning time. This makes toppings such as peanut butter, which is high in good fats, a great addition to this breakfast option.

However, there aren’t too many to list in terms of nutritional benefits. For instance, the level of fiber is particularly low, at less than a gram per serving. Ideally, you should aim for a higher fiber content in your breakfast.

It is also worth noting that the cereal is high in sodium, making up 12% of your guideline daily amount.

Is it gluten-free?

Unfortunately, the Original Cereal is not gluten-free because the principal ingredient is wheat.

Is it vegan?

The Original cereal is not vegan because it contains dairy derivatives and also vitamin D3, which is sourced from sheep.

Is it keto?

No, the cereal is not suitable for those following a keto lifestyle as it is high in carbohydrates and also contains ingredients such as BHA/BHT and sugar.

Protein & fiber content

Kellogg’s Special K Original contains 13g of protein and less than 1g of fiber per portion of cereal. This is 18% of your guideline daily amount of protein and 2% of your guideline daily amount of fiber.

Special K – Red Berries

Those with a sweeter tooth may enjoy the taste of the fruitier offering from Kellogg’s Special K, which is made with tasty ingredients such as real strawberries and rice flakes. This cereal makes the perfect breakfast for those on the go and can even be enjoyed as a late-night snack.

Ingredients & nutritional facts

The ingredients in Kellogg’s Special K Berries are as follows:

  • Whole grain wheat
  • Rice
  • Sugar
  • Freeze-dried strawberries

  • Total Fat – 0.5 g
  • Sodium – 250 mg
  • Total Carbohydrate – 34 g
  • Dietary Fiber – 3 g
  • Total Sugars – 11 g
  • Protein – 3 g

Is it healthy?

In some ways, the Kellogg company Red Berry cereal can be considered nutritious. For example, it is low in fat and in calories too. Because it contains fruit in itself, there is no need to add any other ingredients, which makes the cereal a delicious healthy option on its own.

Furthermore, the cereal provides 15 grams of whole grains per serving as well as a huge 11 vitamins and cereals in each bowl, making it a good option for a wholesome breakfast cereal.

There are, however, some downsides to the berry-full cereal ingredients list. The sodium content is pretty high; however, the total fiber and protein values are lower than ideal, making the cereal a poor choice for those who need fuel for regular and vigorous exercise.

Is it gluten-free?

No, the Red Berries cereal is not gluten-free because the main ingredient is wheat.

Is it vegan?

Vegans cannot eat the cereal as it contains Vitamin D3, which is derived from animal sources.

Is it keto?

The Red Berries cereal is not keto because of the high number of carbs and also sugar syrup.

Protein & fiber content

One bowl of Red Berries contains 9g of protein and 3g of fiber.

Where to Buy

Shop in-store

Luckily, fans will be able to get their hands on the cereal at many stores. Whole Foods, Target, and Walgreens, are all examples of stores that stock the cereal on their shelves.

Shop online

You can also find the cereal online at Walmart, BJ’s, and H-E-B.

FAQs

Which Special K cereals are gluten-free?

Unfortunately, none of the Special K breakfast cereal varieties are gluten-free, as they all contain wheat. It is true that there used to be a gluten-free option, ‘Gluten-Free Touch of Brown Sugar,’ but this is no longer available.

Is Special K Granola Touch of Honey Cereal good?

If granola is more of your thing, then you may be more inclined to try the Touch of Honey granola from the Kellogg company. This flavorful choice offers large clusters of oats sweetened with honey to brighten up your mornings.

Most choose to add real fruit and yogurt to accompany their granola, although at 260 calories per portion and with 9 grams of added sugars, this can be seen by some as a much less healthy choice for breakfast.

Is Special K the same as Corn Flakes?

Although very similar, the main difference between Special K and Corn Flakes is the fact that while the first is made from rice, the latter is made from corn. While Corn Flakes can be considered cheaper and perhaps healthier due to their lower number of calories and fat content, Special K has more to offer in terms of nutrients.

Final Thoughts

Special K can be a great choice for those seeking out a healthy breakfast cereal. With a variety of flavors, ranging from original to vanilla almond, there is bound to be a suitable choice for everyone. It is low in fat and calories and contains a number of vitamins and minerals to help support a healthy diet. It can even be enjoyed as a between-meal treat.

There are, however, some things to be aware of. For instance, it is not particularly high in fiber or protein, which isn’t great for those who are particularly active. In addition, it is important to be careful when looking at the sweeter varieties as these can contain a higher number of sugars.
