Is Special K Banana Cereal Healthy?

This low-fat breakfast cereal is a good source of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, vitamin D, and vitamin E, and because it contains real banana slices it does not seem to rely solely on sugar to retain its great taste.

This breakfast cereal contains several wheat ingredients which make for a healthy, crunchy base; with real bananas… If you don’t think there are enough bananas in a box, go ahead and add some more to boost those natural flavors!

However, it does contain coconut oil and brown sugar syrup, as well as 9g of added sugars to make sure it remains a sweet, flavorful choice. It is a well-balanced cereal containing average amounts of protein and fiber, without being quite so high in sugars as competing cereals that are filled with artificial colors.

Ultimately Special K Banana is no more nutritious than any other cereal, it just isn’t worse either. If you are hoping for a healthy start to the day or an extra boost of goodness, you might fare better with a plain, sugar-free base and add fresh fruit yourself!

Is Special K Banana Cereal Gluten-Free?

No. Whole grain wheat and wheat bran are both key ingredients, so this cereal is not suitable for the gluten-free diet.

Is Special K Banana Cereal Vegan?

This breakfast cereal does not contain dairy ingredients, so you could enjoy it dry or serve it with nut milk for a delicious dairy-free breakfast.

However, it does contain a few ingredients which might make it unsuitable for the vegan diet, depending on how strict a vegan the consumer is:

  • Vitamin D3 is typically gleaned from the grease in sheep wool
  • Vitamin B12 most often comes from dairy, meat, fish, or eggs… not plant sources
  • Sugar is often filtered through animal bone char (in the US)

Is Special K Banana Cereal Keto?

At 35g of carbohydrates per serving, Kellogg’s Special K with banana cereal is not ideal for the ketogenic ‘keto’ diet. Keto hinges on keeping your daily carbohydrate intake low, ideally between 25-50g. Just one serving of this could be all of your allowed carbs for that day.

Is Special K Banana Cereal High in Protein?

Kellogg’s Special K breakfast cereal with banana contains just 3g of protein per serving… which is hardly anything. Protein is an important part of a healthy diet and while it can be difficult to glean much from crunchy wheat and whole grains, as cereals go, this one is not high in protein.

Is Special K Banana Cereal High in Fiber?

Fiber is an important part of any diet and vital for maintaining a healthy gut. Kellogg’s Special K contains 3g of fiber per serving. 2-3g is about average for a breakfast cereal and equates to approximately 11% of daily fiber required to maintain a healthy diet.

Toasted wheat, corn flakes and wheat ingredients are all good sources of fiber, so eating a bowl of this cereal for breakfast is not a bad choice… but if you want to add a little extra fiber to your diet, look for a higher fiber cereal.

Famous Special K Banana Cereal Commercials

Like many of their new flavors, Kellogg’s Special K Banana does not seem to have had its own, specific commercial. Take a look at some other Kellogg’s Special K ads to see how the advertising has changed over the years:

  • Special K (1991) – a somewhat dated, Australian ad where a high heeled show turns into the iconic “K”

  • Special K (2001) – advertising the red berries variety. This ad would have worked well for the banana too…

  • Special K (2022) – shows some of the consistently popular, fruity flavors

Is Special K Chocolatey Strawberry Cereal Healthy?

Kellogg’s Special K is known for being a good source of grain wheat without the overindulgence of artificial flavor used in many competing breakfast bowls of cereal. It contains a large amount of wheat bran and whole-grain ingredients… but does serving it with freeze-dried strawberries and chunks of chocolate detract from the goodness, all the while building up those calories?

Kellogg’s Special K chocolatey strawberry cereal has a whole grain, wheat bran base. This alone contains limited sugar and provides a decent amount of fiber. Kellogg’s special chocolate and strawberry-infused cereal keeps the calorie count acceptably low too at just 160g… compared to the 200-300+ in competing, sugar-infused breakfast cereals.

Now, about that sugar… Those cocoa processed chunks, along with the so-called ‘strawberry filled heaven’ actually make up a fabulous 24% of your daily sugar intake, which is rather a lot to start the day with! The wheat; the minerals; the vitamin intake is all well and good but if you’re looking for cereal without all that sugar and artificial flavor then yes, you can do better.

Is Special K Red Berries Cereal Healthy?

Kellogg’s Special K with red berries is a good source of natural grains and rice flakes. Just one bowl contains 15g of whole grains goodness which is an excellent way to fuel up for the day ahead.

This ready-to-eat cereal is also a good source of 11 vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, vitamin E, and folic acid… but can Kellogg’s Special K Red Berries be considered a healthy cereal?

Well, it is healthier than some, competing breakfast options. This low-calorie cereal might help you drop a couple of pounds when eaten as part of a healthy, balanced diet.

However, at just 3g per serving it is surprisingly low in fiber for a supposedly wholesome wheat cereal and just about average when it comes to protein.

That great taste comes from brown sugar syrup and freeze-dried fruit… and 11g of sugar. While Kellogg’s Special K Red Berries is certainly healthier than high sugar, artificially colored cereals, adding your fresh fruit to a plain, sugar-free cereal and serving it with your favorite yogurt is always going to be a healthier choice.

Is Special K Red Berries Cereal Gluten-Free?

No, two of the key ingredients are whole grain wheat and wheat bran, so this breakfast cereal is not gluten-free.

Is Special K Red Berries Cereal Vegan?

Kellogg’s Special K cereal with red berries does not list milk or derivatives among the ingredients, so it could be enjoyed with nut milk for a dairy-free breakfast cereal.

However, it does contain vitamin D3, which is commonly derived from the grease found in sheep wool. It also contains vitamin B12, which is most often present in animal-based foods, including meat, fish, eggs, and dairy. It is less often contrived of plant origin.

It is also worth noting that many processed bowls of cereal (especially in the US) include sugar which has been filtered through animal bone char. Ultimately whether or not this cereal can be classified as vegan, depends on how strict a vegan the consumer wants to be.

Is Special K Red Berries Cereal Keto?

Unfortunately not. Like most similar, processed cereals this one is a little too high in carbohydrates to be considered keto.

A person following the ketogenic ‘keto’ diet strives to keep their daily carbohydrate intake between 25-50g. This cereal contains 34g per serving… so while it could be eaten as part of a keto diet, possibly, it would essentially gobble up all of your daily carb allowance.

Is Special K Red Berries Cereal High in Protein?

According to their SmartLabel page, Kellogg’s Special K with red berries contains just 3g of protein per serving. Some, high sugar cereals will offer less – but 3g is really not that great with 2-3g per bowl ranking about average among competing for whole grain cereals.

If you are looking to add a little more protein to your morning, try a high-protein cereal instead. Special K Protein offers a considerable 15g of protein per serving.

Is Special K Red Berries Cereal High in Fiber?

At just 3g of fiber per serving, this breakfast cereal equates to only 10% of your recommended daily fiber intake. With all those whole grains and wheat ingredients you might think this cereal would be a little better but fiber-wise, it ranks just okay… with higher scoring alternatives out there if you want to boost your daily fiber intake.
