Map Showing How Cereals Took Over The World

Map Showing How Cereals Took Over The World

Data source: Xinyi Liu; Animation by Javier Ventura/Washington University

The map above shows how four of the world’s most important domesticated cereals spread across Europe, Asia and Africa between 7,000 and 3,500 years ago.

Liu’s study traces the farm-to-table journeys of mainstay cereal crops as they criss-crossed continents of the Old World in three distinct waves:

Before 5000 B.C., early farming communities sprang up in isolated pockets of fertile foothills and stream drainage basins where conditions were optimal for cultivating wild grains that originated nearby. Crop dispersals are generally limited to neighboring regions that are broadly compatible in terms of climate and seasonality.

Between 5000 and 2500 B.C., farmers found ways to push cultivation of various grains across wide regions where crop-compatible weather systems were contained within and separated by major mountain systems, such as those associated with the Tibetan Plateau and the Tianshan Mountains.

Between 2500 and 1500 B.C., farmers found ways to move beyond natural and climatic barriers that had long separated east and west, north and south — mastering the cultivation of grains that had evolved to flourish in the extreme elevations of the Tibetan Plateau or the drenching rains of Asian monsoons. Previously isolated agricultural systems were brought together, ushering in a new kind of agriculture in which the planting of both local and exotic crops enables multiple cropping and extended growing seasons.

One very noticeable missing piece is the spread of corn/maize which originated in the Americas. Yet it is the third most important type of cereal after wheat and rice.

1920 Australian Map Of Sheep & Wheat

The map above is a 1920 New Oxford Map of Australia created by by geographer Thomas Griffith Taylor showing where you can and can’t find sheep.

The categories are very helpfully divided into either no sheep or some sheep. No categories are listed for wheat.

All has a very Settlers of Catan feel to it don’t you think?

Nutrition Facts

While each brand of Wheat Puffs will vary in nutritional values, we have outlined one of the most popular brands below to give an indication of the nutritional breakdown of Wheat Puffs.

One serving size of 1.25 cup (15g) of Quaker Puffed Wheat contains:

Calories 50

Calories from Fat 0

Total Fat 0g

Sodium 0mg

Carbohydrates 11g

Net carbs 10g

Fiber 1g

Protein 2g

Iron 0.4mg

Ingredients

Again, ingredients can vary depending on which brand of Wheat Puffs you purchase, but each type has the same ingredient: Puffed Whole Grain Wheat.

Some brands will add sugar, salt, and even peanut butter (looking at you, Reece’s) which will, of course, affect the nutrient content.

Is Wheat Puffs Cereal Healthy?

Wheat Puffs are considered a healthy breakfast choice when they do not contain colorings, artificial flavorings, salt, or sugar.

They are also rich in B group vitamins, niacin, riboflavin, and thiamine, all of which are vital in promoting good health and balanced nutrition.

As well as this, Wheat Puffs have an ample amount of protein and a complex carbohydrate profile, providing the body with energy and much more.

Is Wheat Puffs Cereal Gluten-Free?

Wheat Puffs are not gluten-free because they are made from wheat, which is a major no-no for those that have celiac disease or any other form of gluten intolerance.

Is Wheat Puffs Cereal Vegan?

Generally speaking, yes, Wheat Puffs are vegan, as they contain no animal products. If there is added sugar in a particular brand of Wheat Puffs, then the answer becomes more complex. Due to its refinement, sugar is not always vegan-friendly and therefore unsuitable for consumption in some people.

However, as a general rule of thumb, it’s always best to check any cereal box that you intend to buy to ensure that there are no added ingredients that could make that particular brand of Wheat Puffs unsuitable for vegans.

However, there is some good news in that Wheat Puffs are suitable for vegetarians.

Is Wheat Puffs Cereal Keto?

Due to the large number of carbohydrates contained within Puffed Wheat, it is not considered a keto-friendly product.

Is Wheat Puffs Cereal High in Protein?

Wheat Puffs per serving have approximately 2 grams of protein, which is 8% of the recommended daily intake of protein. The average male adult who has a sedentary lifestyle needs 56g of protein per day. A woman with a similar lifestyle requires roughly 46g of protein per day.

Therefore, many Wheat Puffs are not considered to be a wonderful protein source. But, many breakfast cereals have as little as 1g of protein, so Wheat Puffs do perform better than most.

Is Wheat Puffs Cereal High in Fiber?

Wheat Puffs are much higher in fiber than many breakfast cereals out there. Some puffed wheat options can contain as much as 8g of fiber, which makes it an excellent option as a start to the day ahead. Fiber has an amazing number of benefits, so it’s always important to consume foods with an adequate amount of it – and Wheat Puffs tick all the boxes in that department.

Wheat Puffs Cereal Varieties

Many companies have their own versions of Wheat Puffs. Below, we have listed three of the most popular American choices:

Reece’s Puffs

Reece’s Puffs, as sold, contain 120 calories and a lot of sugar (9g) as well as sodium (160mg). However, there is goodness in there, too, including Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Vitamin D, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Magnesium, Zinc, and more.

Reece’s Puffs – because they contain peanut butter – are not suitable to be consumed by anyone with a peanut allergy. Always remember to safely store any food items containing nuts and keep well away from anyone who has previously had an adverse reaction to peanuts.

Arrow Head Mills Puffed Wheat

Known as the “Miller’s Choice,” Arrow Head Mills Puffed Wheat has an incredible 8g of fiber and is only 60 calories per serving. It also contains Thiamine, Riboflavin, Niacin, and 18% of the daily recommended amount of potassium. Topped with banana, there will be even more. There’s also no added sugar or salt, and it is suitable for vegans.

Nature’s Path Kamut Puffed Wheat

Nature’s Path Kamut Puffed Wheat is one of the healthiest choices of puffed wheat cereal, containing only whole-grain Kamut Khorasan wheat kernels and nothing else. It’s non-GMO, organic, and 100% vegan.

Added to half a cup of skimmed milk, this cereal has just 120 calories and offers an impressive 5g of fiber and 16g of whole grains. It also comes with minimal packaging, making it ideal for those that are eco-conscious.

Wheat Puffs Cereal Store Brand Alternatives

Many stores will have their own version of Wheat Puffs, so it’s always advised that you shop around in order that you can choose an option that suits your dietary requirements.

Where You Can Buy Wheat Puffs Cereal

There are many places where you can buy Wheat Puffs, such as your local grocers or convenience store.

If you prefer to shop online, you can purchase Wheat Puff cereals at an online store such as Amazon and Walmart, where you might be able to find special deals and promotions.

Famous Wheat Puffs Cereal Commercials

One of the most famous Wheat Puff commercials comes from Quaker back in 1960. In the advertisement, an uncle and his nephew argue over the cereal, with the uncle explaining why the simplicity of Puffed Wheat makes it such a great cereal:

“When you got a good thing, don’t mess around with it.”

You can watch the black and white commercial here.

Is Magic Spoon Blueberry Cereal High in Protein?

One of the biggest selling points of Magic Spoon cereal is its incredible protein content. In a typical 37-gram serving size, you can expect around 13 grams of complete protein, which is especially high when compared to similar cereals.

You can buy these cereals from most popular retailers, including Walmart, Target, and similar high street stores.
